NethWorks.cz: Festival is over,
exhibitions go on

After two busy weeks, the festival of Dutch contemporary culture NethWorks.cz came to it’s end. The festival has become the first comprehensive manifestation of Dutch culture of such extent in the Czech Republic. It included Czech premieres and challenging, creative projects. In a number of Czech and Moravian cities well-known musicians, progressive dancers and troupes were introduced and film screenings, workshops and photographic, artistic and architectonic exhibitions took place, many of which still continue after the closure of the festival itself.

The Moravian Gallery in Brno will, for example, till 27 September host the exhibition Golden Age: Highlights of Dutch Graphic Design (1890-1990). Jaroslav Fragner Gallery in Prague will present till 21 June the touring exhibition of the Netherlands Architecture Institute - Horror Vacui/Urban Implosions in the Netherlands. Gambit Gallery will house till 27 June the exposition of the Dutch artist René Eicke. In Futura Gallery the project The Eventual will take place till 9 August, demonstrating the oeuvre of 10 artists combining video, sound and specific space installations. The works of artists focusing on public space will be exhibited under the title USandTHEM in Václav Špála Gallery till 12 July. For the first time ever in the Czech Republic the Dutch artistic group CoBrA is introduced in Kampa Museum. CoBrA’s art, transcending traditions and drawing inspiration from spontaneous expression and fantastic imagery of children or the mentally ill, will be exhibited till 13 September. Until 25 June the pictures of photographer Šahin Šisić will be presented in Dům národnostních menšin, showing the diversity and richness of the Romany ethnic group.

Heleen Saaf van der Beek, Counsellor Press and Cultural Affairs of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the main instigator of the festival, evaluates the course of the festival as follows:
„I believe the festival achieved its aim. It helped increase the interest of the Czech public in Dutch arts, strengthened mutual cultural relations and brought about new contacts between Czech and Dutch institutions. We witnessed overwhelming interest in many events: both the performances of Anouk van Dijk were sold out within a couple of days and also the concert of Nederlands Blazers Ensemble was enthusiastically acclaimed. We would like to maintain the concept of the festival and, who knows, to repeat it some time in the future. “

Josef Vomáčka from Czech Television commented upon the touring architectonic exhibition Horror Vacui, that takes place in Prague, as follows: „One of the tornado of interesting exhibitions, hurled by Jaroslav Fragner Gallery one after another into the suspicious silence and half emptiness of the Prague exhibition spring, is the fortunately highly valued touring exhibition of the NAi Netherlands Architecture Institute… Dutch architects and developers present magnificent and exciting possibilities how to use vacant lots, empty spaces or used industrial sites and to organize old used complexes in a new way.“

Tereza Lapáčková from the culture website Nekultura.cz commented upon the opening exhibition Choreography of Emotions by Erwin Olaf as follows: „How characteristic of Erwin Olaf to tame this “spontaneity“ by static images of flowers. However, it still has to be left up to the onlooker which motive to imagine behind the ecstatically narrowed eyes. This spontaneous moment, amplified by the stern decoration of the wallpapers, images of flowers and (dead) ikebana, impressed me most strongly.“ Josef Chuchma from MF Dnes Kavárna sees Olafs work as follows:
“… Open situations in Olaf’s work prompt explanations and interpretations...“
